Smithycroft

Smithycroft is a detached thatched cottage at Combe St. Nicholas, near Chard. The shop is 350 metres away and the pub 500 metres, while the nearest beach is 16 miles off. It sleeps six.

The kitchen has an electric oven and hob, two fridges, a freezer, a microwave, a dishwasher, a washing machine and a Tassimo coffee machine, with an island breakfast bar. The dining room has a circular table with six chairs. One king-size bedroom is on the ground floor, set beside an exposed-stone inglenook. Two more are in the eaves upstairs: a king-size with an en-suite roll-top bath and shower, and a king-size zip-and-link bed that can be arranged as a twin on request. The AGA is ornamental only.

The older building comes with things to watch for. Some beams are low, the steps from the parking area are uneven, so luggage goes more easily through the front entrance, and the garden has several small steps and a disused well, so children need supervising at all times. The thatch means no fireworks and no BBQs. CCTV and motion sensors cover the parking area and the rear, and are switched off during a stay. The water supply is private.

The enclosed garden is tiered, with a patio for dining furniture and a dog-washing station. Two dogs are allowed, with additional charges that may apply. A highchair and a stairgate are available on request. Arrival is from 4pm and departure is before 10am. It suits a family or three couples who want a character cottage and travel with dogs.
