A built-up beach with a long history of repair

Minehead Beach lies along the seafront at the edge of Exmoor, close to the harbour and to the West Somerset Railway station. Much of the old beach was washed away in a storm in 1990. A new one was built in 1999 using 320,000 tons of imported sand, held by four rock groynes, so what you walk on today is largely a made beach. The town’s other big draw, Butlins, opened in 1962.

Dogs

Dogs are the thing most visitors with pets need to check. Minehead Town Council’s dog guide lists a seasonal dog exclusion on the beach from the Golf Club Groyne to the Jubilee Cafe steps, from 1 May to 30 September. The rule comes from the public spaces protection order Somerset Council reintroduced in 2024, and the council’s dog control page holds the order and maps. Dogs are allowed on a lead along the Esplanade. Check the signs on the day. For a quieter village beach along the bay, see Blue Anchor.

Tide and swimming

The Bristol Channel’s tidal range can reach 15 metres. Somerset Council warns that the large range means people could get trapped at the bottom of cliffs by an incoming tide, and that warning signs stand at most beach access points. The council provides life-saving equipment at the beach and harbour, and an RNLI inshore lifeboat station sits next to the harbour, but the RNLI’s 2026 lifeguard season in Somerset covered Brean and Burnham-on-Sea, not Minehead. The Environment Agency monitors bathing water here and the council puts up signs showing the rating. Read them before anyone swims.

Getting about

The railway station is close to the beach, and the Esplanade runs along the front. The South West Coast Path starts here at a marker put up in 2001. For the town itself, see Minehead, and for the heritage line that ends at the station, see the West Somerset Railway.

Frequently asked questions

Are dogs allowed on Minehead Beach?
Not on the main stretch in summer. Minehead Town Council lists a seasonal exclusion from the Golf Club Groyne to the Jubilee Cafe steps from 1 May to 30 September, under the order Somerset Council reintroduced in 2024. Dogs must be on a lead along the Esplanade. Follow the signs on the day.
Is there a lifeguard on Minehead Beach?
No. The RNLI's 2026 Somerset lifeguard service covers Brean and Burnham-on-Sea, not Minehead. Somerset Council provides life-saving equipment at the beach and harbour, and an RNLI inshore lifeboat station sits next to the harbour.
Where does the South West Coast Path start?
At a marker in Minehead, put up in 2001, from which the national trail runs to Poole in Dorset.
Is the sea safe to swim in at Minehead?
Treat it with caution. The Bristol Channel has a very large tidal range, and the Environment Agency monitors bathing water here, with signs at the beach showing the rating.
