Sticklinch
Hamlet east of Glastonbury below Pennard Hill
Sticklinch is a hamlet in the parish of West Pennard, a village and civil parish lying east of Glastonbury. West Pennard is situated at the foot of Pennard Hill, and its 2011 population was 670. Sticklinch is a very small place, so what you get here is the countryside of the parish rather than a high street. East Pennard, Ditcheat, West Bradley and Pilton are neighbouring places, and Wells is the nearest city.
The area has older buildings with a local story. Sticklinch Manor is among the 17th-century houses recorded in West Pennard, and the village church, St Nicholas, dates from the 15th century and is a Grade I listed building. A Queen Victoria cheese, once shown at the Egyptian Hall, ended up at a farm in Sticklinch.
Pilton is the wider neighbour that most visitors will know. It is situated on the A361 in the Mendip district, and it is the site of the Glastonbury Festival, which is run by a local farmer, Michael Eavis, and his daughter, Emily Eavis. The village also has a Grade I listed tithe barn that once belonged to Glastonbury Abbey. Ditcheat, 2.5 miles north west of Castle Cary, is another close village, with a Grade I listed church of St Mary Magdalene.
The A361 runs through West Pennard.
