Fleet Air Arm Museum
Museums & Galleries
The Fleet Air Arm Museum at RNAS Yeovilton, now Royal Navy Museums: Naval Aviation. Climb aboard Concorde 002 among more than 90 aircraft.
A museum that has changed its name
The Fleet Air Arm Museum is at Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Yeovilton, BA22 8HW, a working naval air station. It is now part of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, and its web pages are branded Royal Navy Museums: Naval Aviation, so look for that name as well as the old one when searching or following signs. The collection is described as more than 90 aircraft and 30,000 artefacts.
Concorde and the carrier
The headline exhibit is Concorde 002, the first British-built Concorde, and visitors can climb aboard it. Wheelchair access inside the aircraft is restricted.
Because the museum is on an active air station and exhibits are conserved in turn, some areas may be barriered off during your visit.
Practical details
Opening days follow a pattern: the museum says it is open Wednesday to Sunday, and every day during Somerset school holidays, but check the current times on the museum website before you travel. Returning visitors are asked to bring photographic ID.
There is a large free car park, with 230 spaces including 15 disabled bays, and no advance booking is needed. Road works near the museum come and go, so read the travel page the day before you set out.
Getting around inside
The museum is spread over four large exhibition halls, with a mix of lifts and stairs linking the ground and first floors. The main entrance is up a large staircase about 40 metres from the car park, and there is also a pedestrian gate onto the ground floor for anyone who cannot manage the steps. The museum does not lend wheelchairs, so bring your own if you need one, and expect some areas of the working air station to be harder going for visitors with limited mobility.
Nearby
The museum’s address is in Yeovilton, and Yeovil is the town to look at for places to eat and stay. For a second collection on a different theme, see Haynes Motor Museum.
