The Newt in Somerset

Gardens

The Newt in Somerset, a garden and farm estate at Bruton with a Roman villa experience, a Story of Gardening walkway and hotel. Check entry before you go.

A garden estate with a farm

The Newt in Somerset is at Bruton, BA7 7NG, and combines gardens, woodland, a farm, restaurants and a hotel on one estate. The Story of Gardening takes you through gardens of different periods, and needs no booking. Visitors can also try the Beezantium, which looks into the secret life of bees, and Villa Ventorum, a Roman villa experience.

What a day visitor needs to know

Read this first. The Newt’s site promotes membership as the way to get the most from the estate, and the Garden Cafe is limited to members and guests with a Member Day Guest pass. The visiting pages do not set out a one-off day ticket, so do not turn up assuming you can pay at the gate. Call the estate on 01963 577750 or check the opening times page of The Newt’s website first.

Timed slots are essential for the Beezantium and the Roman Villa Experience, booked through The Newt App or at the Threshing Barn. Both sit a long walk from the car park, so allow extra time.

The estate runs on a working-farm basis, with a bakery, butchery and its own produce listed on its site, plus restaurants that take bookings through the website. Call ahead if you want a table the same day.

Dogs, payment and parking

Pets should stay at home. The estate is a working farm with poultry and deer, and only assistance dogs are allowed. Payment is by card or contactless only, and there are no cash machines on site, so bring a card. The Station Cafe at The Creamery is described as a dog friendly eatery.

The site offers a garden map showing where to park, so look at it before you set out. Garden hours change between summer and winter, so check them before you leave.

Nearby

If The Newt’s entry arrangements do not suit, Barrington Court and Montacute House are National Trust gardens in Somerset, both with parts of the house closed in 2026. Wells Cathedral and Glastonbury Abbey are two other heritage days out in Somerset.
