An Elizabethan house of glass and ham stone
Montacute House, in the village of Montacute (TA15 6XP), is a National Trust house that the Trust describes as a masterpiece of Elizabethan Renaissance architecture and design. The Trust describes glowing ham stone walls with towering walls of glass. The house is surrounded by a garden and parkland.
What is open in 2026
Check this before you plan the day. The upper floors of the house stay closed for 2026 while the Saving the Staircases conservation project goes on, and the Trust has reduced its ticket prices to reflect the work. The Trust says there is plenty to see on the ground floor, as well as in the garden and parkland. The house, cafe, garden, parkland, shop and second-hand bookshop each have their own opening times on the National Trust property page, so check it for current arrangements.
Gardens, parkland and facilities
Outside, there is a garden and parkland to walk, and a picnic area close to West Drive with a natural play area. Dogs are welcome in the garden, parkland and the courtyard outside the cafe, although only assistance dogs may enter the house. The site has a cafe, shop, toilets and cycle parking.
On access, the Trust lists Blue Badge parking, an accessible toilet and two manual wheelchairs to borrow. For route details and the layout of the ground floor, use the access information on the property page, or ask the venue before you go.
Making a day of it
Another National Trust house in Somerset, Barrington Court, is also part-closed in 2026: its Court House is shut for repair, while the ground floor of Strode House, the garden rooms and the orchards are open. The two are different places, so compare the property pages before you choose, or plan both for the same trip.
Elsewhere in the county the Trust also looks after Tyntesfield and Dunster Castle.
