Mark
Levels-edge village near Highbridge and Bridgwater
Mark is a village in Somerset that lies approximately 10 miles from Bridgwater, 5 miles from Axbridge and 4 miles from Highbridge. The parish had 1,397 residents at the 2021 census, and it includes the hamlets of Yarrow and Southwick. The Mark Yeo has its source near the village.
The oldest building is the Parish Church of St Mark, also called Holy Cross, which was dedicated in 1268, is mainly 14th and 15th century, and is a Grade I listed building. In the churchyard a former market cross dates from the 15th century, and the Methodist Chapel on The Causeway dates from 1797. History is deep here: the estate was given to the Bishop of Wells by Edith of Wessex, and with Wedmore it endowed the deanery of Wells Cathedral, an arrangement that continued until 1547.
Before April 2023 the village was in the Sedgemoor district; it now comes under Somerset Council. The name may come from an Old English word meaning a boundary of property. The historian John Allen Giles was born at Southwick House in Mark in 1808, and the author and journalist Reginald Urch was born here in 1884.
Bridgwater is the larger town in the area.
