Henley

A quiet hamlet in High Ham parish, Somerset Levels

Henley is a hamlet in the civil parish of High Ham, in Somerset. The parish takes in High Ham and Low Ham and a handful of small hamlets, of which Henley is one. High Ham had 909 residents at the 2011 census, its postal town is Langport (postcode TA10), and it has been under Somerset Council since 1 April 2023.

A Victorian gazetteer of 1870-72 described Henley as a tything in High Ham parish, on the river Cary, 4 and a quarter miles north-west of Somerton, with a population of 93. Somerton has its own page at Somerton.

The best-known sight nearby is in High Ham itself. Stembridge Tower Mill is described as the last remaining thatched windmill in England, and the National Trust cares for it. It was built in 1822 for Robert Tatchell. The Church of St Andrew in High Ham is Grade I listed, with documentary evidence of a church there in 1168, though the present building is later.

Shapwick, whose cottages are also filed here, is a village on the Polden Hills overlooking the Somerset Moors. Shapwick Heath is a former raised bog in the basin of the River Brue, a national nature reserve, and one end of the Sweet Track, a wooden causeway from the 39th century BC.
