The Old Cider Barn

Start with the age rule at The Old Cider Barn: babies and children from 1 year to 9 years are not allowed. The barn sleeps four, so it is for adults or families with older children. It stands in the quiet village of Wookey, at the foot of the Mendip Hills.

A bespoke staircase leads from the ground floor, where a large lounge and a kitchen/diner have wooden floors, up to two bedrooms, a double and a twin. They share a shower room with a shower, WC and washbasin.

The kitchen has an electric cooker, a dishwasher, a fridge, a freezer and a microwave. There is a TV/DVD and central heating, and bed linen and towels are included. A heating supplement is added to holidays starting between 16 September and 27 May.

Outside, a small gravelled courtyard has a barbecue, and off-road parking takes two cars. The Ring O' Bells, a 16th-century pub serving home-cooked meals, is 50 yards away, and the nearest shop is 2 miles off. Paintings by local artists hang in the barn. Pets and smoking are not allowed, the owners do not accept worker bookings, and electric vehicles cannot be charged at the property.

Best for two couples, or parents with older children, who want a pub on the doorstep and a barbecue in a courtyard.
