Sammy Hakes Cottage

Sammy Hakes Cottage sits on the harbour in Watchet and sleeps two. It is three parts of different ages joined together: the oldest part dates from the 1600s, the bedroom end from the mid to late 1800s, and a lookout tower was added in 1938 and still carries a decommissioned air raid siren. A book about the cottage's history is kept inside. Different parts of the house look over the harbour and lighthouse, one for sunrise and another for sunset.

The layout is reverse-level. The ground floor holds a double bedroom with a stable door onto the private patio. The shower room has a walk-in shower, basin and WC. Upstairs is one open-plan room with the kitchen, dining table and sitting area. The kitchen has an electric oven and hob, a microwave, fridge, washing machine, kettle and coffee maker, and there is a TV and WiFi. Heating is underfloor electric plus a separate electric heater. Fuel, power, bed linen and towels are included in the rent.

Read the access notes before booking. A spiral staircase leads up to the lookout, where a further double bed is tucked into a snug, and reaching that bed takes good mobility. Because of this, children must be over 10. Pets are not allowed, smoking is not allowed, and guests are asked not to light candles or oil lamps. A good-housekeeping bond is payable.

Shop, pub and beach are each 0.1 mile away. It suits a couple who are comfortable with stairs and want a small harbourside base rather than a large house.
