Wootton House

Wootton House is an 18th-century country house on the edge of the hamlet of Butleigh Wootton, on the Somerset Levels, near Compton Dundon and about 7 miles from Glastonbury. It stands on a 1,000-acre estate of gardens, woods, parkland and working farms, and it sleeps sixteen.

Downstairs are a sitting room with a marble fireplace, a drawing room with an open fire and French windows to the front garden, and a dining room with a long oak table. The back hall has two pianos. The kitchen has a 4-door Aga and a pantry, and professional catering can be arranged. The Abbots Room is a games room with table tennis, a children's snooker table, darts, a TV and a PlayStation 2.

Upstairs are eight bedrooms: two four-poster rooms, two other doubles, one with an en-suite bathroom, and four twins, one en-suite shower room. Some twin beds can be zip-linked into a double. The house has five bathrooms in all. A cot and highchair are available on request.

Outside is an enclosed garden with a tennis court, a children's play area and a croquet lawn. A natural swim pool, reached through a converted potting shed and a glasshouse, is open from Easter to the end of September. Parking is off-road for eight cars. Three well-behaved dogs are welcome, and more by arrangement. Smoking is not allowed. Weekly bookings start on a Friday, and short breaks start on a Friday or a Monday. Check-in is at 4pm, and a good-housekeeping bond is payable.

It suits a large family gathering or a group of friends who want a big kitchen, a games room and a tennis court.
